چکیده

We investigate the asymmetry of the scattering cross section of radiation around Lyα by atomic hydrogen, which may be applied to analyses of scattering media with high column neutral hydrogen densities including damped Lyα absorption systems of quasars. The exact scattering cross section is given by the Kramers-Heisenberg formula obtained from the fully quantum mechanical second-order time dependent theory, where, in the case of hydrogen, each matrix element is given in a closed analytical form. The asymmetric deviation of the scattering cross section from the Lorentzian near the line center is computed by expanding the Kramers-Heisenberg formula in terms of ∆ω/ωLyα, where ωLyα is the angular frequency of the Lyα transition and ∆ω is the deviation of incident radiation from ωLyα. To the first order of ∆ω/ωLyα, we obtain σ(ω) = σT (0.5f12ωLyα/∆ω) (1 − 1.79∆ω/ωLyα), where σT is the Thomson scattering cross section and f12 = 0.4162 is the oscillator strength for the Lyα transition. With this deviation, the line center of the damped wing profile apparently shifts blueward of the true Lyα line center. In the case of a damped Lyα system with a H I column density 5× 10 cm, the apparent line center shift relative to the true center amounts to 0.2 Å resulting in an underestimation of redshift by ∆z ∼ 10. A measurable underestimation by an amount of ∆z ∼ 10 is expected for absorbing systems with NHI ≥ 4× 10 22 cm.

Calculation of the triple and double cross sections in the proton-hydrogen impact at the ionization channel by removing singularity in the scattering amplitudes

In the present work, the triple and double cross sections of atomic hydrogen ionization in collision with the proton are  calculated. The potential of the interaction is considered as a Coulombic;  also,  the first and second order Born approximations have been used. The singularity of the Green operator in the second order approximation has been removed for the analytical solution of the scatt...

Elastic scattering of quasi-free electrons in strongly asymmetric collisions

A systematic study of the doubly differential cross sections for the electron emission occurring in fast strongly asymmetric collisions is presented. Protons and atomic hydrogen (0.5 MeV) were collided with the heavy targets krypton and xenon under single collision conditions. The ejected electrons were observed at laboratory angles in the range 0'<8,5180"and with energies E,from 25 to 1400eV. ...

Scattering of 15N ions with the energy of Elab = 23 MeV on the CH2(Au) target is investigated.  Elastic scattering of these ions in the angular range of 7°-19° was measured by employing the silicon strip detector, “LEDA”. Using the measured scattering data, deviation of ion beam, number of incident ions on the target and differential cross sections of the 12C(15N, 15N)12C elastic scattering in ...

Rayleigh and Raman scattering by hydrogen and caesium

An inhomogeneous differential equation method is used to calculate the Rayleigh and Raman scattering cross sections for atomic hydrogen and atomic caesium as functions of wavelength below and above the ionization limits. The profile of the scattering cross section near the 6s-6p resonance of atomic caesium is determined by including an energyindependent radiative width in the scattering formula...
